Safe and Drug-Free: A Peer Leadership Training for High School Students

Over 200 student leaders and 37 faculty advisors representing 18 high schools attended Safe and Drug Free: A Peer Leadership Training for High School Students on November 29, 2005 at the BU Educational Center in Tyngsborough, MA.

This dynamic peer leadership training gave high school students the opportunity to learn more about ways they could make their school and community healthier and safer. Topics addressed included: alcohol and other drug abuse, bullying, gambling, media literacy and body image, sexual assault prevention and much more!

Students and advisors ended the day by creating an action plan for beginning to address these issues at their local schools.


Over 200 students and 37 advisors from 18 schools attended MPY’s Second Annual School Safety Summit for High School Peer Leaders held on November 29, 2005 at the BU Center for Education in Tyngsboro, MA.


Dennis Brooks, from the Massachusetts State Police, is the lead Detective in the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and gave a presentation to peer leaders about the realities about drugs on the streets of our cities and towns.


Jessica Cunningham, from MEDA taught a workshop entitled Mind Over Media which explored the messages embedded in today’s advertisements and which encouraged students to use critical thinking skills when confronted with such images.


Jim Wuelfing, from the Mass Council on Compulsive Gambling taught a breakout session on problem/compulsive gambling and how to help a friend who may be in trouble with gambling.


Mary Sullivan, Executive Director of Middlesex Partnerships for Youth, led an advisor roundtable which offered practical tips, strategies and best practices for running effective peer leadership programs
