Professor Michael Nakkula, longtime director of the Risk and Prevention master’s program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will present a view of risk and resilience derived from his 2006 book (with Eric Toshalis) Understanding Youth: Adolescent Development for Educators. Professor Nakkula will describe how the risk-taking tendencies of adolescents can be a source of resilience, and how educators can tap into and cultivate that potential well-spring. Drawing from research and both clinical and educational practice, this presentation will frame risk and resilience as parts of the same whole, and outline best practices for addressing each side of the risk-resilience dynamic.
